Spent Grain

Yesterday I received a drive-by supply of Spent Grain from my beer supplier. Spent Grain is:
"a byproduct of beer brewing consisting of the residue of malt and grain which remains in the mash-kettle after the mashing and lautering process"
It's basically the grain that is left over after brewing the beer and it's full of fibre; and instead of throwing it out, it can be used in the production of food stuffs like bread and cookies! So I of course tried both.
Bread

Mmm... the smell of fresh bread baking. I haven't tried making my own bread before in a normal oven. My family tried using a bread maker a number of years ago but it ended up being one of many unused appliances that sat at the back of the cupboard.
Nevertheless I tried a recipe online that was linked to me. I combined the sugar, yeast and water, then piled in the spent grain and mixed in the flour. Doubling in size twice I threw it in the oven and as I suspected it was thick and partially uncooked with a hard top, but did that stop it being delicious with some Vegemite or peanut butter, no, it was still very tasty.
Cookies

There was also a cookie recipe as well and it is phenomenal, I mixed up the ingredients a bit and basically they contain:
- Peanut butter
- Butter
- White/Brown sugar
- Milk
- Wholemeal flour
- Baking soda
- Chopped dark chocolate
- Chopped whole almonds
- Spent Grain
You can see the process I went through while making them in the photos above.
The spent grain gives it this delicious texture as you chew it. A really nice wholesome grain flavour with a good amount of dark chocolate and a bit of peanut butter.
As they come out fresh you have melted chocolate through the cookie, so good.
