Site Updates

22nd May 2011

The past week i've been transitioning my site to a new hosting provider and thought it would be an appropriate time to write a post about the site in general.

Reflecting on the past 9 months or so i've really been enjoying making weekly posts to the site, with 66 in total so far.

Over time i've been making adjustments here and there as it evolves. I've been working on a couple of particular things the past few weeks, they are:

  • Clouds - The clouds in the background now have a much softer style and the number has tripled in size. They move ever so slightly from left to right as if they were real clouds. Not enough to be distracting, but enough to just notice. Each time you visit the site the position of the clouds change randomly. Each size of cloud also moves at a different speed (big = faster, small = slower). Each individual cloud also travels at a randomised speed so they are all unique. I've been wanting to do this for some time, carefully considering performance and usability, it was worth the hours I put into it.
  • Recipes - As the number of my recipes grow each time I make a cooking post, i've started a section to store them, a lot of the time I come back to reference them when i'm shopping and thought it was time for a section just for them. I've also made a bunch of updates as i've been improving a bunch of them. The nachos post has changed quite a bit as i've been a bit addicted making them the past few weeks.
  • Photos - The photo a day project is going well, most of the time the photos are just quick shots, I don't have much variety in subject matter since I don't go out of my way every day. I don't want to devote huge amounts of time every day as it would just run my life, as long as I get some decent photos once in awhile it's good. Some weeks have been bloody hard as the last thing I want to do is take a photo so resort to some random shot, i'm going to keep soldier on though.
  • Misc - A whole bunch of miscellaneous wording and style updates i've been meaning to make for some time. Including rewriting the about page, footer and so forth.

I have lots of things in mind for the site which i've already been working on and features that won't be online for at least 6 months. It's really enjoyable having my own space that i've built myself to write, no matter how many people read it, it's a ton of fun.

Admittedly I wouldn't have done a whole heap of things unless it was for this site. Coming back after a few years it will be great to reflect on what I have done, read my thoughts and share it with others.
