The Art of the Brick

22nd January 2012

The Art of the Brick is an art tour currently on show at Sydney's Town Hall. It has been touring the U.S for some time and was one of CNN's top 12 must-see exhibitions.

It showcases the works of Nathan Sawaya who uses nothing but Lego bricks in a huge variety of objects.

I first heard of it when a friend went down to Melbourne and saw it. Later seeing that it had come up to Sydney, I thought it was worth going even though I had heard a mixed review.

In the end I really enjoyed going, if you really like sculpture and Lego, it's worth it. You can probably experience it just as much by looking at a few photos around the web. It's only on for another 2 weeks.

While these sculptures are made of Lego, it has a strong art focus, it's not the traditional Lego I have from memories of playing with it while I was young, like building castles and pirate ships, so I can see why some people, kids especially, would be disappointed, if they didn't know what they were in for before they went.

As a said above though, I really appreciate the style of his work. While walking around I started getting my own ideas of what I could create if I had an unlimited supply of Lego bricks and time.

My favourite scupltures are below, but if I had to pick my top 3, they would be:

  1. Still life with fruit bowl (black and white theme)

  2. Raindrops and the 3d effect

  3. Figure hanging from a ledge

Other highlights were the peace symbol, constructed with pieces of Lego sent from people all around the world and the giant dinosaur, which is hard to miss, I wonder how long that took...

They have a store at the end and it was filled with the unmistakable Lego heads which I covered some time ago, it made me grin.
