Garlic

18th December 2010

So I probably eat a bit too much garlic and rather than using freshly chopped garlic I resort to using the jarred organic variety that is 90% garlic and 10% vinegar.

It's not the best way to enjoy garlic and the fresh variety is always better. So I decided to order some from someone named Patrice Newell from Elmswood Farm in the Hunter Valley.

It's just coming into season and for a box of 1kg purple garlic it costs around $38. It comes delivered in a neat box with air holes as garlic needs to be constantly ventilated with an instruction card (pictured) and the garlic itself.

The recent weather hasn't been very kind to farms across the country but Patrice has managed to send out garlic regardless.

I tried eating slices of it at first and it has an instant spicy/hot taste with a nice fragrant smell, I then chopped a good amount of it up with a bit of salt and made some garlic bread under the grill. Really delicious.

I've been eyeing a garlic soup recipe on Patrice's site and am thinking I might give that a go. Otherwise it will be used in soups and other dishes in the next few months.

You can find lots more info on their website.
