Click Goes The Shutter

28th December 2010

In my last post for this year I thought it would be interesting to compile a retrospective on a website i've been following. It's called Click Goes The Shutter, it features a photo for every day of the year, 365 photos in all, shot by someone named David Prentis.

You mightn't think its hard taking a photo every day for a year, but its tough, especially if you want to take something at least remotely interesting after a day at work.

With a few days remaining it looks like he's going to do it which is a pretty cool achievement. He's spent the better half of this year travelling around which has made for some excellent opportunities.

I reviewed all the photos, marked the ones I liked, did it a second time in case I missed anything, then slowly dwindled the list down to only 10, then reviewed them all again, just in case.

It was a tough decision as there were many other great shots to include. The final list turned out to be a lot of photos from overseas.

The decision making process was pretty much looking at how they were shot, the subject matter and just my personal opinion.

Below is my top 10 and my reasons for choosing them, ordered by day.

I don't remember what was written about each photo, but to go and discover that some of these photos were his favourites, or that he spent a lot of time composing each one is pretty cool.

Day 21

"Up bright and early at 5:15am to drive down to the beach. Took quite a few nice sunrise photos but I prefer this shot as its different from anything ive done before. Went for a swim and the water was beautiful. Good start to the day."

This is such a perfect morning beach shot, brilliantly timed, the light is stunning, too good not to include.

Day 79

"Up at 6am this morning to catch the sunrise at Turimetta Beach. Started off pretty plain but later the orange came out in the sky and made for a beautiful sunrise and day."

My favourite of all the sunrise shots, the colours in the sky, the dark rocks and the distance to the cliffs in the background.

Day 200

"Group of riders coming down the descent of the Port de Bales in Stage 15 of the Tour de France."

I absolutely loved this years Tour de France and can't wait to watch it again. It was brilliant following it closely and understanding how it all operated. It must be a fun experience being there.

Day 212

"Lake Bachalpsee, a 50 minute walk from First above Grindelwald. Although having been here about 10 times over both my visits here I am still yet to get the perfect day to photograph this lake. So many things just need to be perfect, and the weather at this height just changes too often and too quickly. This is the best ill probably ever get. I wish I wasn't a perfectionist because I would have saved a lot of time and money trying to get this photo!"

Perfection, a shot from Grindelwald really shows off the beauty of the place, I want to go here.

Day 258

"Boats anchored off the shore on the lovely island of Capri near Naples, Italy."

Looking up from the trees to the waters edge to the deeper water and the individual miniature boats with such detail, brilliant.

Day 300

"Yes, I went back. This is probably one of my favourite photos of the entire trip, and one of the most memorable days."

A photo from a great series of shots inside Auschwitz, the fence, the birds and the tone is perfect.

Day 318

"Brandenburg Gate at sunset."

It makes you think you are upside down, above the clouds, outside the earths atmosphere in the shadows of a giant space ship. This is a very surreal photo. Absolutely stunning.

Day 326

"A road in Cologne near my hostel."

Maybe an unusual photo to pick, but the lighting on the left side of the building and in particular the signage looks fantastic, it's hard to explain but this is really great.

Day 335

"The ruins of Urquhart Castle sitting on the edge of Loch Ness."

It's all about the detail in this photo, the small stairs in the centre of the photo, the miniature looking wooden walkways and the chairs covered with snow nestled in the old ruins.

Day 339

"The Wallace Monument in Stirling, Scotland with snow capped hills in the background."

This photo resembles a snowy wasteland, a watch tower with intricate spires in the middle of nowhere, cold and deserted, beautiful.

You can find all the photos here, there is also a blog, Cool Story Hansel.
